Work in progress...

lunedì 27 marzo 2017

If you’ve passed in my Etsy shop, you’ve probably seen that it’s closed now; I decided to do so because I want to improve a lot of things there, things that can’t wait anymore to be changed, it’s a hard job, but someone has to do it, and… here there’s no one else except me, so the time has come! :)

Etsy Resolution Italia

This need for changes came while I followed the Italian Etsy Resolution program, which helped me see what was wrong in my shop, what needed to be improved, and what had to be done to find its way and become the awesome place I’ve always dreamt about. During the time it lasted and while I followed the exercises they gave us, I had the opportunity to focus on what I have to improve not only in the shop, but also in its virtual homes you can find in the net (they're in the column on your right). I had time to find what was still missing, what I could share with and through my creations, and how I could put a “little” piece of me into them. I hope that what emerged with digging into the heart of Naturæ Cor is really representative of its core nature.
I have to admit that this wasn't the first time that I followed the Etsy Resolution program, because I tried following the UK program organized last year, but it didn't work very well for me. I don’t know if it was because of how it was organized or because of the social media chosen to run it, but it was really difficult to follow. Even if the Italian edition chose the same social network (a Facebook group) to let members discuss and grow together, in my opinion it was far better organized than the British 2016 edition. First of all, Etsy sent an email after signing up the program explaining what the member could do before opening a shop (because the program was made for people who desired to open an Etsy shop from the scratch, even if there were also people - like me - who already have one which needed to be improved). After a week, the program started and it led us into an intensive month: each week had its own topic which was showed and explained firstly through emails we received from the marketplace which led us to related articles of the sellers’ handbook, than we had to do the exercises about the particular topic and wait for the tutors and members’ reviews, and - if there still were some doubts about the topic - we had to make questions which would find answer in a video in which the tutor made a sort of resume of the topic of the week.
I wasn't really sure about joining it again, because thinking about the previous “British” (...there were several people from outside UK) experience led me to think it wouldn’t be so helpful, but when I knew who would be the tutors of the course I had no doubts: it was going to be an interesting and useful program. The tutors were the former captain of Etsy Italia Team, Francesca Baldassarri, and the former admins of the same team, Irene Renon, Marta Bra and Laura Dusini: names that made me think that the program would be organized, planned and run very well, making it a great opportunity to improve my skills as shop owner. And it definitely was.
It was also a starting point, because it made me understand that there are passions that I want to cultivate and improve, because they're part of my creative life and they have all an important role in it, even if they play it in different ways. I found two of them particularly important: photography and drawing, and they're the first I want to begin exploring.

Accidents happen sometimes… | Quegli incidenti di percorso…

Nevertheless, my hands are so busy now: I made the first part of the Spring collections, but unfortunately one of the materials I used made it burn during the baking, so I have to made it again (but there won't be other over baked or "we're gonna burn" pieces in the future, so don't worry!). I know that it's a very sad happening, but I can’t stop thinking about the great opportunities it gives me: I can improve some parts of the pieces in ways that I wasn’t able to do when I first made them and using materials I hadn’t few days ago: they’re going to turn out better than the first time, but let’s cross our fingers for an extra amount of luck.
More over, the burning accident turned out to be more fruitful that I hadn't expected: between the burned things there were also a pair of earrings I made that I would have completed after the baking, but luck decided that I had to make them again and a little bigger than the first attempt, but what's more they gave me the inspiration to create a whole collection dedicated to them and the subject they were inspired by, but I don’t say anything more about them: let me surprise you!

Commissions in progress | Commissioni in corso

I'm also going to start a commision I had very recently, which turned out in an unexpected and fab way, because I can consider it as the first piece of a serie I was only dreaming about in the last months, but if you like the idea and what you're going to see after I'll end the commission, well... I've tons of great ideas and I'm completely open to each new one you want to share with me, as you can see. I'll explain more about this project when I'll show the finished creation, be patient!
If I have to say the whole truth, I’d never thought to be so excited about doing a commision, I’d always thought that it would be hard to do because you had some limits, not only the ones you naturally have, but also the ones which are given by the object of the commission as well as the expectations of the brave person who asked you to challenge yourself by going beyond your own limits, or finding a good way to do a great job while respecting your skills and improving them at the same time. Any way I found joy and pleasure while working on it, because even if you're the designer and the maker you're not completely alone and have the pleasure to co-work with someone else: that's something very important to me, because it elevates the person who asked the commission to the level of co-maker, because it's thanks to her that I can create, she's joining the making of the piece she asked for, even if she only gave a topic and shared 15 minutes of her time to explain me what she wanted. It was during these minutes that I had the insight about how the piece had to be, what features needed to be underlined and what values had to be stressed. I’m really appreciating working on this commission, because respecting the needs of the request doesn’t mean going against my own way of creating a piece of jewellery, but following it completely: it means let my creativity fly and find its way in the matters used. It’s amazing!
It’s not the first commission I have, but those of the past were mostly reproductions of what I already made, so I only had to follow my notes and designs making little differences in order to make them one of a kind pieces too, but this time it’s completely different and that’s why I’m so excited!

So… stay tuned for the coming creations!
